Web 2.0 Applications & Their Impact on Education

We continue learning about Web 2.0 applications. We already familiar with Blogs and Wikis and learned more about Socialbookmarking and VoiceThread. It is time to move forward and discuss the impact of those Web 2.0 tools on education.

I would like to hear from you how and when you will using wikis and blogs with your students. Provide an example. Are you interested in creating a VoiceThread? What do you think about Socialbookmarking?

Make sure you engage in discussion with your classmates.

I love this!!! You can imagine how excited when I seen this. I work with students who are lacking in social skills. I hold a social skills training class once a week with them and will use the voice thread to help them understand the topic of the week.
I plan to post a picture every week and have them go to the web site and comment on what they feel the picture is saying and why. I am excited to get started.

I really like the use of Wiki's and Social Bookmarking. I am not to sure about Voice Threads and especially in elementary.
I believe Wiki's are a great thing to use in the classroom and will be a helpful tool for all students in the class. I would love to use Wiki's when students have a test at the end of the week. I would post different test question reviews on Wiki and allow the students to put the correct response to the question. Then I would ask them to discuss the correct response with each other. Then I could go in and correct responses to the question.
I also was very interested in using Social Bookmarking. I think this would allow me to collaborate with other teachers and work on ways to improve students learning by finding different useful websites. I think students could also use Social Bookmarking when doing research on-line. They would be able to make a list of different websites and work together to find information.
I believe Wiki's and Social Bookmarking are great educational technology tools to use in the classroom. I feel that they could help students in many different subject areas.

I am going to be teaching Mathematics so I am not entirely sure how I will be able to incorporate wikis and blogging into my classroom curriculum, however, if there was a way then perhaps it would increase the level of motivation in my classes. One way I thought that a wiki could possibly be used is if I posted sample problems and then the students could go in and post the steps to solving the problem and the solution and then their peers could come behind them and agree or edit their mistakes. I think this could be an interesting way to incorporate cooperative learning into the lesson. I am very interested in the social bookmarking because you can use it to find sites that maybe teachers or other professionals in your subject area found helpful instead of just searching blindly using a search engine.

At first i was a little skeptical about using a blog, but now i must say that it has grown on me! I would like to use blogs outside of the classroom. My vision is using it as an homework assignment for the students to update and comment on others peers pages. In all honesty, at first glance I'm not a big fan of the Voice Thread. I did like the Social bookmarking though! I think that is a very important tool. It definitely is a must for a teacher, and i would, with out question, use it.

I think the Wiki is quite interesting and can see how this might help children. Students can easily correct grammar such as capitol letters, punctuation marks, etc. They can also add on to other student's comments if they agree or disagree and explain their reasons. I like how My ETEC Blog said that you could put test review questions online and have the students type in the correct answers. I think you would have to get on alot and make sure they are the right answers. You don't want other kids studying the wrong answers then getting to class and wondering why they made a bad grade. I still don't understand the voice thread or what its purpose is. I did like the social bookmarking. I think that is a great tool to have because it allows you to get help and help other peers in the same field as you.

I really like the idea of allowing students to use wiki's and blogs in the classroom. By using wiki's I can post discussion questions and allow my students to respond and also allow them to change, add to, or explain the answers added by others. As for the voicethread,I am not a big fan of. I do not really see how I would use it in my classroom, but maybe if I learned more about it I would have a change in heart. Last but not least is social bookmarking. I absolutely love this idea. Social bookmarking is a terrific tool for teachers to use to get ideas for lesson plans and share their ideas and lesson plans with others in the same subject area. I really enjoyed this assignment and will definitely consider using these tools in my classroom.

I do think that I will use the social bookmarking but the wikis and voice thread are tools for older students. The voice thread I thought was a knowledgeable website for personal use because there are many things about different people from many countries you can learn about. I think this would be a good website for students who do research and also for people who spend alot of time on the computer.

I actually liked looking at all three . I will think I will absolutly use blogs with my students. I think they will enjoy it and it really encourages the kids to read and write more. It also think they will feel that it is more fun than work. The social bookmarks seem like a good idea, too. I know I get really frustrated when I'm looking for web sites and I can never remember which ones I can go back to later and I hate adding it to my favorites because they get all mixed up. It is like a zoo. I like the idea of being able to better organize the sites and share when needed. I feel that I will probably use it for myself and for the students when needed. The wikis was interesting, but I honestly like the blogs better. They can make the blogs look more personal.I don't think that I will personally use Wikis. The voice threads was interesting and would probably be fun for the students. It's an interesting way to find research, too. It would be something that I might look at and see what kind of response the students give back.

I loved this class session! i learned something new and something that can be very beneficial to me in the future regarding my profession I am seeking. I really enjoyed everything but most of all i really liked the voice thread. There is so much that you can do with this and this is also something that high school students will enjoy doing as well. It will help them develop creativity and thinking outside of the box. Social book marking was okay. The students could look up things and share them amongst eachother. Which is good for engaging and interaction. Something that most classrooms lack. However I am a little skeptical about using wiki and I do not think I would use it. Because the information presented can't be trusted. Random people can just go in and change the information at anytime whenever they feel like it. One person can put one thing and so one els can go back and change it. Alot of confusion will take place, students and myself as well would not know what to believe. So its kind of hard to decide whether I would use this in the classroom or not.

All in all they all can be very beneficial and fun for use in the classroom, especially for english classrooms. There is so much that can be done and learned from the three applications.

I enjoyed the class. I learned new things that I can use when I become a teacher. I could use the socail bookmarking to better organize all the sites that will be useful during my years of teaching and another great thing is that I will be able to share with other teachers. The voice thread was awesome. With the whiteboards that were place in the classroom this year I could show some of them to the classroom as part of a lesson. Tonight I just learned three great tools that will be useful during my years of teaching.

I missed class but have read over the lecture, as well as, checked out the wiki site for ETEC424. Wikis seem great to me! They will allow interaction outside of the classroom, and school for that matter. It will open up a new realm for students. If they are struggling with a homework assignment, the wiki allows them to log on and converse with other students about their questions. It can be developed to utilize student, teacher and parent interaction even more than the occasional meet the teacher night that everyone stops going to by high school@

I like the use of wikis. I plan to use wikis with my students by letting them communicate together in homework assignments. One day they would read their reading assignment and then get online and talk about the story with each other. The student's will then respond to each others comments. Maybe one student can get something from the reading and explain it to the others that maybe didn't get it. This can also help the shy students who don't talk much in class get involved in the discussion. And for those who don't have access to a computer at home, they can post their comments before class starts, during morning work.

I do agree with shortstop KA. I was a little skeptical to about the blogs but what I have learned so far it is a great communication tool between peers. The voice thread would not be a good idea for younger children though the more I researched it. Maybe grades 6-12 would be great! I really like the social bookmarking because of other great ideas other people may have.

The class last Tuesday, was very interesting. I learned how to use Wiki, Social Bookmarking, and Voice Threads. I will become a Math Teacher and surely I will use these information in my classroom. For example: With Wiki I will post an online test by inputing some false information and ask them to log in and fix the wrong problem (s), and this way let them learn how to edit these information by editing it with the right one.

I will use Social Bookmarking in my classroom as well, but I will start using it right now. As a Teacher Aide I can save all my information into it and open it as I need to in different classrooms when I go to work with the students. I have to go in to four different classes and instead of caring my laptop around all the time, I will save the information that I need in Social Bookmarking and that's it!! The information will be there when I need it.

With the Voice Thread I will make teaching movies and have the students to watch them during tutorials and if any one of them has a question about the subject they will be able to go to a webpage or blog that I will create and download these movies and watch them over and over as they need to get the assignment done.

These are three tools that could be called the "right hand of a Teacher".

Using a wiki for your classroom can add many benefits, not only for students, but for the instructor as well. Classroom work could be posted on the class wiki allowing each student to share their information if someone is having trouble. Sharing is what makes social bookmarking so powerful. It has too many benefits to name. Me and my students can move from one computer to another and still have full access to our bookmarks. We will be less likely to forget the location of the sites we have used. Compared to the technology we had when I was younger ( a blackboard) this voice thread seems impossible to me! I find it difficult to get my head round modern technology, let alone knowing that one day these things will be common place for my grandchildren! Technology is great when it is used for good. This new innovation has broken down the barriers of the classroom, and it is really exciting to hear. I really like the idea that there are not only a select few dominating the conversations you see in the 'regular' classroom. The whole world can get involved. Simply amazing!

My ETEC Blog, I didn't think about using wikis to help students prepare for tests. That is a very good idea. Also as you said with social bookmarking helping students with their research, I have already found that it is a useful study tool for me. When you're in college and you're studies are focused on one area then it is very helpful to have a place to keep all of your resources so that you can use them later.

ShortStopKA said...

I agree with shelly. And I never thought of using wikis as reviews for tests. I would personally find that much more easier than a review sheet. Tell me what on the test and ill look up the wiki. PLus, using bookmarks for students to control their research and not just teachers seems very useful. After all, students have just as much stuff to keep up with as teachers. They even have more than one class. Students should definitely use social bookmarking.

hey everyone I think we all learned alot about what were able to do with technology. Just remember that this is only .10 or less of what out there or what we still have to learn.

HEy Joyce here forgot to say that I was at the fair last week here on campus and I saw this program that is on all computer on campus. This program cost about 800 dollars but we can get it for 250 through the university. It is called text help. I saw a demo and got a free 30day copy to try it at home. I promise if you take a look at it you will want it. This program can take your notes, and read your notes to you. That is only fraction of what it can do. Everyone when you get a chance and your on campus check it out

I agree with Toi. The idea of using bookmarks will help us as teachers to work as a community to find new and interesting websites to share with one another for teaching our students. I think it is very important for teachers to come together and figure out ways to use new technology, like wikis and blogs to enhance students knowledge in many areas. Kailey King

I like the idea Landon has for using wiki's. I think it will be a great way for students to use it for doing homework assignments. It will allow them to collaborate with one another and teach each other about new information that they may be struggling with in the classroom. I think using it for a test review would be another way to use wiki's and help students collaborate to enhance their educational knowledge.

Hey Joyce, this is William, just a question: do they still have this program for sale at the university? are you using it?? I am really using the Social bookmarking at my work and it is excellent for what I am doing!!

JT said...

Yes I will use wikis with my students to post problems and make sure they are doing them right. By doing this, they can work the problem and I can check everyday whether or not they are doing the problems right or not. And they use blogging to ask me questions if they ever needed help on a problem.

I am eccentric about the wiki and the voice thread. I will be teaching Spanish so the fact that I can put the lecture online for later reference or that I can put tutorials for pronunciations facilitates methods of learning in the classroom. I believe that by allowing them to correct things on wiki or by them posting blogs that the grammer part of the lecture will be enhanced. It is often difficult for students to receive foreign language assistance outside of the classroom. Through the social bookmarking, blogging, wiki, and voice thread, not only are they able to receive peer assistance but the teacher is also able to explain and further help students at the convinience of their home.

I agree with you ShortstopKA, I too was skeptical at first about using blogs. I have not ever used them until this semester in th class. I too see this a great homework assignent and not only that but if there are computers in the classrroom some classwork assignments could take place. I believe group working would be good for this, like the voice trhead app. this would be very fun in the classroom.

landon said...

I like what Karla said. Many students are never interested in doing more studies in high school outside of what is required, but you still have those students who care about their educations. I agree that this will be a convenience to those students who want to further enhance their understandings or skills in a subject. For my subject, health, I see it being a great tool because I can post information on nutrition, work out plans, new fads in health, etc. for my students.

I dont think that I will have time in my class to use these blogs. In my class we will be talking about different types of livestock animals, plants, and wildlife. i dont believe that this will benefit my classroom even though for other subjects I can see how helpful this will be.
